Refugee Week 2017

Every year, we coordinate a range of activities and events, along with a network of other volunteers and organisations for Refugee Week and this year’s celebration was another success. Thank you to all involved.

This year’s events were:

Sunday 18 June:
Sixty (Stories of Crossing Continents) at BB1 for Life with DARE-Darwen Asylum & Refugee Enterprise
People shared their own stories with tea and cake generously supplied by BB1 volunteers.

Monday 19 June:
Wonderland (Youth Theatre showcase) Action Factory/Darwen YT at Darwen Library Theatre
Extracts of Alice in Wonderland and songs/dances/poems by the performers.

Tuesday 20 June:
ARC Drop In at Wesley Hall Methodist Church
Members contributed to the display of butterflies at Darwen URC.

Wednesday 21 June:
DARE Drop In and ‘Migration is Beautiful’ display at Central URC, Darwen
Display of butterflies created by different groups, plus refreshments.
Launch of ‘My New Light’: Young people’s art exhibition, Blackburn Museum and Art Gallery
Urmila Chowdhury working with Action Factory and local young people.
Launch of Urmila Chowdhury’s art exhibtion at Perspectives, Beacon Centre, Blackburn College
Urmila’s final exhibition as a student at Blackburn before going on to Goldsmith’s in London.

Thursday 22 June:
Library tour and introduction to Life in Britain at Blackburn Library
People newly arrived had an introduction to the library and the facilities, as well as Life in Britain.

Friday 23 June:
Welcome Breakfast at Liz n Lil’s
International food and tea/coffee, prepared by volunteers. Speakers: Razia Anwar and Ahlam Hasan

Saturday 24 June:
Refugee Week celebration at Blackburn Museum & Art Gallery – art session with Urmila/Action Factory.
Team Faizy: film by Anton Yavorsky shown at Fit2XL Community Boxing Club, Lower Darwen
Documentary on a young Afghani boxer and his struggles-in the ring and with the UK immigration system.

Wednesday 29 June:
‘Eat Together’ at Blackburn Youth Zone: 5th Birthday Celebration with drama, art and food organised by Action Factory/Refugee Week BwD volunteers.
