Since April 2017, we have been running arts workshops at Blackburn Youth Zone. After a pilot project with visual, writing and drama sessions to see what most interested the young people, we began running drama sessions with Diversity and Senior Club and visual arts and crafts with Junior Club.
This has continued every week, with the visual art and drama work also shown at an event on 29 June, connected with Refugee Week, Eat Together and Eid celebrations. Weekly workshops are delivered by Kerry (Drama) and Nudrat (Visual Art) plus we have fantastic support from Action Factory’s volunteers: Tinta, Nicole, Mirza, Roisin, Mary and Urmila. We have had guest writing workshops for Juniors and Diversity Club by Tom Green, connected with the outreach work for Tom Molineaux, we have run a workshop for Festival of Making at BYZ and supported the President’s Cup at Carlisle Youth Zone, judging the dance entries and involved Senior and Youth Club members in the 1973 project at King George’s Hall.
In collaboration with BYZ staff and volunteers and the Diversity Club Ambassador, we aim to complement themes set by the Youth Zone, as well as consulting/reviewing with the groups themselves. We are looking for ways to extend the work into a longer term programme, via additional joint funding applications, as well as developing accreditation and other opportunities, such as Arts Award, festivals and other performance events.
